About Max

Allegany County shaped who I am — and public service has shaped my career.

I was born and raised in Cumberland, graduated from Fort Hill High School, and became the first in my family to graduate from college. I have spent more than a decade working in public service, while staying deeply connected to the schools, neighborhoods, and civic institutions that make Allegany County home.

Background

A life familiar to many families here.

My mother had me at 17, and most of my childhood was spent in a single-parent household. We struggled to make ends meet and relied at times on public assistance. I received free and reduced-price meals, speech therapy through Allegany County Public Schools, and help covering costs my family could not always afford.

I started working in local restaurants at 14 to help make ends meet, and I kept working through high school, college, and graduate school. Like a lot of families here, work and education were never separate parts of life — I had to balance both. That experience taught me early what it means to stretch a paycheck, manage competing responsibilities, and keep moving toward a goal even when there is not much margin for error.

Education was the turning point. Teachers and school staff saw potential in me and invested their time in helping me succeed. Their support helped make college possible, and I became the first in my family to earn a degree.

That experience is part of why I care so deeply about public institutions, but it is only one part of my story. Over the years, I have built a career around helping government and civic organizations work better, communicate more clearly, and serve people more effectively.

Family & home

The reason coming home mattered.

My wife, Jessie, and I both grew up in Allegany County and graduated from Frostburg State University. She has spent her career as a public-school teacher, and her experience in the classroom has given me an even deeper appreciation for the people doing the daily work of educating and supporting children.

After nearly a decade away, we returned to Cumberland in 2022 to raise our two children close to family and in the community that shaped us. Coming home changed how I thought about service. The future of our schools, neighborhoods, parks, local institutions, and economy stopped being an abstract policy question — it became the future my own children would inherit.

That is a major reason I stay involved. I want Allegany County to be a place where families can build a life, where young people can see a future for themselves, and where leaving for opportunity does not have to mean leaving home behind for good.
